Someone Out There Must Know?

Posted by: someonelsehasit on: January 14, 2008

is unisom safe for breastfeeding? i can’t take ’simply sleep’ or ‘tylenol pm’(both of which are considered ok while breastfeeding). the main ingredient is diphenydramine and it increases my restless leg syndrome way too much-makes it painful! for kerry too apparently! lmaoi noticed unisoms main ingredient is different- doxylamine succinate. it isn’t pulling up on safefetus.com,can anyone help me out? ;) melatonin did NOT work!! it made me very sleepy(not the loopy sleepy like ambien)and i slept great for 2hrs then was up all night with heart palpitations icon_cry.gif

Tuesday Edit* i called my Ob and they said it is safe! fingers crossed that it will work!

Bummer to hear about the melatonin!

Sucks about the diphenhydramine, too. Although, it doesn’t do a thing for me as far as making me sleepy. Once upon a time it did…but had to take it round the clocks for days and after like 2 or 3 days I quit sleeping..but those 2 or 3 days all I did was sleep!

About unisom…I found this, don’t know if it helps! http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/pfirsttri/0,,midwife_3pm4,00.html

bren-thanks! :) yea i know the unisom and B6 combo is really popular for pregnancy vomiting ;) . hmmm, seems it would be ok for nursing then too,but i’m not 100% sure.she sleeps thru the night so it would be a good while in between when i took it and when she nursed.

it HAS to be safer than ambien tho right? hmmm.maybe if it is a toss up my dealer will keep giving me the ambien-which is what i want anyways.my OB agrees that ambien is quite safe with nursing.hardly detectable amounts pass into the milk. why mess with a good thing? UGH! my sleep is at stake here, therefore my happiness and everyone elses around me! lmao

Uh…would argue that it’s a bit more than your happiness at stake–it’s your sanity! Believe me, I know! I went for months without sleeping but at most an hour or so a night–and not actually even in the night…was like at 6 am. Was not a good time for me!

Why wouldn’t your doc give you the ambien? Worried about the addiction possiblities? Heck…I was taking that stuff for over a year every night. No addiction for me. But, I do know some people get hooked.

Hope it works out.

she keeps going on about how it is a schedule IV controlled substance. but i have been taking it nightly for nearly a yr now.originally prescribed by the ob,then after i got a written note with documentation saying it is safe while bf,she took over the rx after erika was born.she wasn’t gonna give me more but i was able to get 3 more months worth but not full months.better than nothing.i just persisted but this will be it. gotta post about this in a bit….
